Saber metrics Project World Series 2016:
AL Wild Card- Dylan
With a final score of 8-5, the AL Wild Card game between the Orioles and the Blue Jays was a suspenseful confrontation. With the Orioles having a winning percentage of 55% and 54% for the Blue Jays the game was tight. In the end the Blue Jays won which could have been predicted upon viewing the individual player's batting average. On the team level the Blue Jays have a team batting average of .340 while the Orioles have a .095. On an individual level, third baseman, Donaldson of the Blue Jays had a batting average of .600 . On the other team Machado had a batting average of .200. Dodgers vs. Nationals-Dylan The NLDS series between the Dodgers and Nationals ended with a score of (3-2) leaving the Dodgers victorious. This seems to defy the Nationals winning percentage of 58% whereas the Dodgers managed a slightly lower winning percentage at 56%. At first glance at their batting statistics it seems that the Nationals should have won. With players like Ryan Zimmerman (6 hits and 2 doubles) it seems that the Nationals have a better overall batting average. However, as a team the Dodgers performed better with most team members getting at least one hit. This is why the Dodgers beat the Nationals. General Definitions-Dylan Winning Percentage shows how many games a team has won. It is calculated by dividing the number of games a team has won by the total number of games that the team has played. Winning Percentage is important to baseball because it details what percentage of games a team has won which is useful for comparing teams or for a coach to assess his players. Record shows the number of games a team has won in contrast with the number of games they have lost. Record is calculated by determining the total number of games a team has played and then discovering which of the games the lost and which games they won. Record is important to baseball because it can demonstrate how many games a team has won and lost which is useful for comparing teams similarly to Winning Percentage. Games Behind is an equation used to find out how many games behind a team is compared to the leading team in their division. Games Behind is calculated by subtracting the leading team’s wins from the other team’s wins plus the leading team’s losses minus the other team’s losses divided by 2. Games Behind is important in baseball because it can show how far a certain team has until they become the best in the division. Record Division is the record a team has in games played against other teams in their division. Record Division is calculated by determining the number of wins and losses for each team and using that to find how well a team stacks up against the other teams in their division. This is important to baseball because it allows teams to find out where they stand in their division. Record in League is the record a team has in games played against other teams in their league. For example, if the Chicago Cubs are in the National League, their league record would be their record against other teams in the National League. Record in League is determined by comparing the wins and losses of a team to other teams in their league. This is important to baseball because it allows teams to find out where they stand in their division. Home and Road Record is a calculation which shows how many wins and losses a team has playing on the road versus playing at home. To calculate Home and Road Record you must determine how many games a team has played on the road and at home and how many losses and wins were in each. Home and Road Record is important to baseball because it shows whether a team is better when it plays at home or on the road. Pythagorean Expectation is the use of a team’s runs scored and runs allowed to determine how many games a team could have won. To calculate the Pythagorean Expectation you square the runs they scored and then divide it by the runs the scored plus the runs they allowed squared. This is important to baseball because it allows for the rough prediction of how many games a team could win. |
